Supporting independence beyond the assessment

Margaret was referred for a Foundation Home Assessment after her daughter noticed that everyday tasks were becoming more tiring and less steady following a recent illness. Margaret was managing at home and did not feel her situation was serious enough to seek formal help, but wanted reassurance and practical advice.

The assessment identified some mild balance issues, difficulty standing from low seating, and increased fatigue with personal care tasks. A small number of proportionate recommendations were made, including minor equipment and changes to how certain activities were set up at home, which immediately improved safety and confidence.

During the visit, it also became clear that Margaret was privately funding all of her support and household costs, despite having a modest pension and no recent contact with statutory services. She had worked throughout her life and assumed that any financial support would be means-tested or unavailable to her.

Following the assessment, Versatile provided guidance on potential entitlements and supported Margaret and her daughter to explore Attendance Allowance and informal carer registration. With simple signposting and assistance navigating the application process, they were able to access support they had not realised may be available.

Several weeks later, Margaret’s daughter reported that the combination of practical home recommendations and improved financial support had significantly reduced stress within the household. Margaret felt more confident moving around her home, while her daughter described feeling reassured that they now had a clearer understanding of what help was available should Margaret’s needs change in the future.

This wider, person-centred approach ensured that the assessment did not simply identify physical risks, but supported long-term independence, stability and peace of mind.
